Burger Time!

Anyone reading my blog has been or at least heard of Joey's Hamburgers, a classic burger joint who's time has unfortunately passed. Every neighborhood has some old Mom & Pop greasy hamburger place that nobody knows about except the locals. A few months ago I stumbled across such a place while meeting up with my Mom who was staying at the Glenmore Inn. It had a weird location just off Glenmore Trail in between the industrial area and some dirty houses. Right beside the hotel was an old strip mall which had a Salvation Army, pawn shop, liqour store, a couple restaurants, and BOB'S HAMBURGERS. I knew from the first time I saw it that I would have to eat there one day.

This place is old school! The inside is so dated, but that's fairly obvious by the Pac-Man on the sign. Operated by some Asian's, Bob's has been around for over 40 years and is the first hamburger restaurant I've been to that had a take out/delivery menu. All prices on the menu include GST, so what you see is what you pay, which is cool. The selection of burgers is pretty varied from the usual burgers to bacon burgers, teriyaki burgers, buffalo burgers, chili burgers and the oddly named gram master burger. The buffalo burger isn't actually made from buffalo, it just had some weird sauces on it. The gram master burger is just a regular burger with thousand island dressing on it, yeah I know it doesn't sound good at all. It sounds even funnier as the Double Gram Master Cheese Burger Combo, which can be had for only $5.50 and remember that includes GST. All burger places some heart attack inducing combo (Wendy's triple burger nearly killed me) and Bob's would have to be the Double Mushroom Cheese Bacon Burger Combo at only $6.00. I wouldn't wish that on anyone!

In addition to burger they also do hot dogs, chicken fingers, chicken wings, and spring rolls. Spring rolls? The spring rolls and wings can be had in various amounts with the biggest being the "Big Box" which contains 80 wings or spring rolls! That is a lot of spring rolls.

Anyway, I ordered a double cheeseburger combo which of course comes with fries and a drink. The way they cooked the burgers is awesome...by conveyor belt! It's some machine that has duel conveyor belts which cook the burgers and just like BK they're flame broiled. The burger itself wasn't bad, it did have a bit too much mustard on it though. Fries were good.

Bob's not only sports Pac-Man on their sign, but one of the greatest most ridiciulous slogans ever!

"Swallow out pride" At first I didn't even notice it and after we ordered and were sitting down waiting Cody was making reference to their slogan and I didn't even get it. Afterwards I saw it on the sign and burst out laughing, "If that's all you swallow then you're lucky!"

I guess Bob's is a "cult" place that you go there more for the experience. The take out menu I mentioned looks like it was printed on someone's home printer with spelling mistakes including the restaurant's own phone number, one of the numbers is written over with a pen. Although, I would recommend going there during the day. Still if anyone is in town and wants to go check it out, I'll gladly go.

Snake Eyes!!

Yes, that is what Snake Eyes will look like in the new G.I. Joe live action film out summer 2009. They nailed his look pretty good and hopefully they do the same with Stormshadow and the rest of the characters. After watching a lot of comic book, cartoon, and TV shows made into movies I know not to get too excited because they'll usually end up falling short. Check another Snake Eyes picture at the original AICN post where I stole this picture from.

Speaking of TV shows being made into movies, the A-Team movie already has a release date of June 12, 2009. I'm not sure how official that is since they haven't even cast the movie, forget about started shooting it. John Singleton is signed on to direct it which may or may not be a good thing. He may take the A-Team and turn it a more serious, but the TV show was always fun and never took itself too seriously. There are internet rumors casting Ice Cube as BA, but that dude has lost all his cred after Are We There Yet? and Are We Done Yet? Also, Woody Harrelson is also rumored to be playing Howling Mad Murdock. So far things aren't looking too good for the A-Team movie.

More movie news! This time it's a movie that probably won't disappoint...X-Files 2! It's hard to believe it's been almost 10 years since the first X-Files movie. I remember I went and saw it at the Crowfoot theatre on opening night and we pre-bought our tickets and everything. So far things sound pretty good for the sequel with all the original cast returning and Chris Carter directing the movie. The movie is being released July 25th and so far doesn't even have an official title. There are no trailers online for it yet. I didn't find a couple that were on YouTube, but when I went to watch them, they had been removed. Damn! I watched season one on DVD a little while ago and watched a season seven episode that was on my Millenium season three disc (they fought zombies!) and I forgot how good it was. Hopefully the movie can return to it's TV roots of monsters and such.

They're back!!

Old Dutch's Mexican Chili chips are back. I guess they finally gave in to public demand and started making them again. I haven't eaten them forever! The last time I got them was probably from Barney's back when it used to be cool, so you know that is a LONG time ago. They taste nostalgic.

DVDees

Check it out! The DVD on the top of the stack is Legend of the Black Scorpion, the one I won online. It was even sent out FedEx! Although, FedEx sucks, so it still took a week for me to get it after it arrived in Calgary. I watched it yet though and hopefully it won't suck. The other discs are Millenium Season 3 which I'm almost done and Ghost in Shell: The Laughing Man. The Ghost in the Shell is a movie edited together from episodes of the TV series Standalone Complex. It's a pretty long movie at 160 minutes. They also did the same thing to make another movie called Individual Eleven.

This week Appleseed: Ex Machina also came out, the latest import from Japan, based on the comic book by Shirow Masamune (the Ghost in the Shell guy). It's actually the sequel with the first movie coming out in 2004. Remember Cam, I forced you to watch it! This time around John Woo is on board as a producer and yes there are doves! CGI doves! The CGI is stepped up from the first movie and the animation is stepped up. The people still have that cell shaded, or toon shaded look from the first too, but the detail and animation is way better. The movie opens with a kick ass action set piece, but the entire movie isn't all action. Why not?! But you still get the goods and some mecha action too. I definitely recommend watching this, so rent it or maybe you can find it previously viewed cheap. I bought the two disc metal case version, but the second disc of extras was pretty useless. Have a look, you may not love it, but you'll be impressed with it.

My new pal

I found this little guy at work mixed in a bag of manila clams. I brought him home, but I'm not really sure why. I don't have an aquarium to put him in. What the hell does he eat? He'll just end up dying and getting flushed down the toilet. If he survives the night I'll take him back to work and put him in the shellfish tank. He'll probably end up dying in there too, but he'll have better chance and last longer too. Although he did manage to survive being caught and bagged with the clams. Then getting shipped for two days from the coast to Calgary. And then another night stuck in the box because we couldn't find it because it was in the meat department.

I tried looking online to find out what kind of crab he is, but didn't have much luck. The internet is useless!

What time is it??

Did anybody know there was a time change last night? I didn't, so I was an hour late for work. Since I was late I missed all the nerds lining up outside the store, so they could get their hands on Super Smash Brothers Brawl.

NERDSSS!!!!

Toyz

I picked up a couple cool little toys on Friday. This first guy arrived in the mail and is a Konami Figumate Gamera figure from Japan as part of his 40th anniversary. He's all cartoony and cute looking! Apparently at one time Cartoon Network had signed a deal with the Japanese studio to produce a Gamera cartoon, but after the latest Gamera movie bombed at the box office the deal fell through. Well, at least we still got this set of figures that also include Gyaos, Guiron, Viras and Zigra.

Head on!

Removable fireball!

I was at Phoenix Comics and they had a box of loose toys and I got this bag of little movie slashers. The bag has three characters in it; Jason, Freddy and Leatherface. Once I got home and opened the bag the Leatherface had both his legs broken off which was no big deal because I'm not a big Texas Chainsaw Massacre fan. The Freddy was almost all there, but was missing a piece off his little display stand which was a disappointment. The one good thing is that the Jason figure was all complete.

Isn't he cute with his little bloody machete?

Limited time offer!!

It's March 5th and the biggest holiday on the Irish calendar is soon aproaching, St. Patrick's Day. What better way to celebrate it than with a Shamrock Shake from McDonald's. Yes, they're back! I don't think I've had a Shamrock Shake since I was a kid, plus not even liking McDonald's doesn't help much. I thought I read somewhere that the Shamrock Shake was just a regular vanilla shake that was colored green. This just maybe an urban legend, but when I bought one the other day from the McD's down the street I distinctly tasted mint. The shake itself wasn't anything all that special, but I guess the fact that it comes once a year and is a limited time only deal make it taste a little bit sweeter.

I was going wait until St. Patrick's Day to make this post, but as the signs in the restaurant say, it's here for a limited time only. Get yours today! If you want to make St. Paddy's Day even more green than head over to San Francisco, the unofficial St. Patrick's Day decorating headquarters. Their unwanted massive amount of all things green with clovers on them make it an ungodly green blight upon shopping malls everywhere. Seriously though, it's tacky.

I WON! I WON! I won a DVD in an online giveaway. It's for Legend of the Black Scorpion starring Zhang Ziyi from Dragon Dynasty. I actually haven't heard anything about this movie, but entered the contest anyway because even if it sucks it's not like I paid for it. Dragon Dynasty puts out pretty decent Asian DVD releases, so at least I know the quality is good. Wal-Mart actually had a bunch of DD DVDs marked down to $10 and up last time I was there and got the Shaw Bros classic King Boxer. They even had the Internal Affairs trilogy marked down too. Internal Affairs is the movie the Hollywood remade as The Departed. I went back because I wanted to get some other discs, but they were all sold out. Bummer.

The Wrong Guy

When I came home from work Cody had left the TV on Encore and some movie was playing that had David Foley in it. After changing I sat on the couch and starting watching it because I was too lazy to turn the channel. As it turns the movie was hilarious! Okay, not laugh out loud hilarious, but smart and amusing hilarious.

It looked a bit old, but I had never seen it before. It was totally Canadian with Dave Foley as the main character and Colm Feore as the bad guy. Jennifer Tilly plays the love interest and for some reason Joe Flaherty plays her father. Kevin McDonald has funny cameo as a guy working the front desk of a motel. Even the Barenaked Ladies have a cameo. The Farmer Brown character was one of my favorites.

I looked it up on the IMDB and it's called The Wrong Guy from 1997. After seeing the box art I does look familar like I've seen it sitting on the shelf at the video store, but never rented it. I wish I hadn't taken so long to see this one! If you haven't seen The Wrong Guy, the definitely check it out.
