Free?

I came home this afternoon and when I went to walk down to the bank I walked past our garbage bins on my way through the parking lot.  I saw four skateboards sitting beside the bins where people leave crap they don't want.  Usually, it is actually just garbage that people are too lazy to throw in the bins or it's too big to fit in the bins, but this this time it was skateboards!  I did my stuff at the bank, came home and went and threw out our garbage and since the skateboards were still there I took one.  The people next door moved out today and I just assumed the kid next door just left his old boards there.  If he didn't then I stole some kid's skateboard.

This looked to be the best one of the bunch.  One was all spray painted blue on the bottom, the other looked a little beat up, one I didn't even bother checking, I just grabbed this one because it looked okay.

After closer inspection the board has cracks under both trucks, but it's no big deal.  The trucks are Independent and in pretty good shape, with hardly any wear on them.  The wheels are okay too but the graphics on the outside are worn off, so I can't really tell what company they are.

Later on when Cody got home I told him to grab a board from himself, but he wasn't biting.   I was going to make him watch Gleaming the Cube again to pump him up, but the three boards were gone by after dinner time.  Cody said when he left for work this morning they had the moving van out front and the skateboards were laying in the neighbour's front walkway, so they must've been the kid's.  If not then some other kid learned a valuable lesson that if he values his stuff to not leave it laying around by the garbage bins.

Did you know?

That April 29th is National Canadian Film Day?  I didn't, but I do know after reading an article about it on Yahoo.ca.  If I had known sooner I probably would've made an effort to watch a Canadian film in celebration of NCFD.  Next year I will, so please don't forgot to remind me.

If you visit the National Canadian Film Day website they have links to where you can view Canadian films totally free of charge!  Don't worry it's not all crap, so do yourself a favour and at least check out Meatballs, Videodrome or Bon Cop, Bad Cop.

In other movie news, during Easter week Cody was back in Moyie, so that meant I could watch any (and I mean ANY!) movies I wanted.  Cody only watches art house movies and stuff, so it was a nice treat to watch "my" movies.  And just because no one asked, here is the list of stuff I watched in Cody's absence.

Skyline - I think was released in theatres at one point.  It seems a like TV movie just with better effects.  PS - Aliens attack!  PPS - You don't need to watch this movie!

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl - I haven't seen this movie for so long, possibly in the last time was in the movie theatre.  It was nice to go back and watch it again.  Each movie seemed to get worse and worse, but At World's End was awful.  I kept checking the time every 5 mins wondering when it was going to end, but unfortunately it was 169 minutes long.

Wizards of Waverly Place: Alex vs Alex - A TV special.  The DVD has the last episode of the TV series on it as an extra which was nice because I never caught it.  Now I can finally have some closure in my life!

Buddha's Palm - A crazy Hong Kong martial arts fantasy film.  I could you give a synopsis, but it wouldn't make any sense and you probably won't believe me anyway.

Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance - Neon Genesis Evangelion was a Japanese anime series which has been made into three(?) movies.  It uses the plot of the series, but they animated everything from scratch and it looks awesome!  One character kind of seemed to appear, then disappear and then reappear again at the end, so I'm not sure what was going on there, it seemed like maybe some scenes were cut.  I don't know.

Oblivion - Olga Kurylenko is pretty.  That is all.

The Myth - A Jackie Chan movie that I never bother to watch and now I know why.  Now I just have to watch The Tuxedo and The Medallion to complete my circle of shame.

Space Pirate Captain Harlock - I already wrote something about this one.  Check my earlier posts.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice - Nicolas Cage + Jay Baruchel = Instant classic.

Minority Report - FAIL!  I bought this at Cash Converters where I also buy a lot of my other movies and I got flim flammed!  I went to watch it and it turned out to be a bootleg and an absolutely terrible quality bootleg at that.  It looks like a fourth generation VHS copy that someone filmed with a camcorder of the movie on the TV.  See for yourself.

Most scenes looks a lot worse than this one.  I just used this one because for some reason there was a "p" on the top left hand corner.  ??

Patlabor: The Movie - Another Japanese anime movie this time about cops with big robot suits aka "Labors" .  There is a live action version of this coming out soon.

War of the Worlds: Goliath - Colossal disappointment!  I had read good things about this 3D Blu-ray of a 2D animated movie, but they were all lies.  The story was pretty weak and the animation was pretty crappy.  I know it a smaller budgeted movie, but most animated shows on TV look better.  Also, the sound was effed up on my Blu-ray with dialogue sometimes seeming a second or so out of sync.  Boo.

That was all I managed to watch before Cody got back.  We watched a couple movie upon his return.

Morgan Stewart's Coming Home - An 80's teen comedy starring Jon Cryer and Paul Gleason plays the bad guy.

King Solomon's Mines - Another classic from Golan Globus.  I haven't seen this one for a very long time, it holds up better than I remember it.

In closing I'd like to say to not to forget to remind about National Canadian Film Day next year.  Thanks.

Cosplay!

This weekend is the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo and again it's a big deal.  So big in fact that io9 has an article about some of the cosplay at the con.  Okay, it's less article and more a bunch of pictures.  Take a look and see if you can spot professional cosplayer Jessia Nigri.  Her cup size is over 9000!!  I stole that last line from someone else's comments, I'll give you hint, it's related to Dragon Ball Z.

http://io9.com/the-most-sensational-cosplay-from-calgary-expo-so-fa-1568088819

I said "it's a big deal", but not big enough to get me to go.  After the fiasco a couple years when the Star Trek: TNG guys were there I've kind of given up.  I mean they always bring out a few people I'd like to go see, but I'm not that motivated.  Lots of cool people there this year, here are my picks, Bruce Campbell, Anthony Daniels, Lance Hendricksen, George Romero, Micheal Rooker, J. Scott Campell, Kevin Eastman, Terry Dodson, Fiona Staples, and Alfonso Ribeiro!

Update: io9 must really like the Expo pics because they've done a second page of cosplay pictures.  They should've just stopped a Dark Helmet because it's the best.

I bet Cam already knows all about this

http://kotaku.com/one-writer-is-chronicling-the-insane-history-of-eve-onl-1567084192
Why can't Cam just play something cool like Pokemon?  I guess it's still better than WOW.

Bacon makes everything better

A few weeks ago I was at Safeway and was walking by the bakery when I noticed they some new varieties of donuts out, to be precise "gourmet donuts".  They just take regular donuts and kick them up a notch.  There was one which had brownie chunks on it and drizzled in chocolate sauce, one was a chocolate dipped donut covered in mini M&Ms and another with pecans on it with various sauces, so it's like a Turtle.  I figured it was about time I gave one on these a try, but I went with none of the above.

MAPLE BACON DONUT!

If I ever eat a donut it's usually a maple dip variety or something with cinnamon in it.  If they ever come out with a maple dip cinnamon donut it will be my greatest dream come true.  Yes, ahead of money, success, love, etc.  Also, I spell it "donut" not "doughnut", so deal with it.

Visually Unprecedented

Last night I watched a Japanese movie on Blu-ray that I ordered from Hong Kong.  The movie hasn't been released in North America yet, so I just ordered the HK version because their discs always have English subtitles.  In case you're wondering the movie was Space Pirate Captain Harlock.

The franchise has been around for a while I've never actually seen an episode of the TV show, watched a movie or read any of the manga.  Although, I was aware of it!  Last year it finally hit Japanese theatres in an new updated 3D CGI movie.   I guess making the movie was hard work or something because they list the making of specs of the movie right on box/sleeve.

Yes, it looks real pretty, so I guess all the hard work paid off.  The lasers are so pretty.  The movie was okay, it needed more lasers though.  I watched it in 3D, but watching a subtitled 3D movie kinda of detracts from the 3D because you are too busy reading subtitles than taking in 3D.  I'm sure it will come out in NA eventually, but I don't want to wait.  While the box of the box has the tech specs the front of the box had a quote from the James Cameron.

So does he like it or what?

When in Rome

I already mentioned that my Mom and sister went to Rome and even posted a picture of some weird Invisibile Guido.  When I was back in Cranbrook last week my mom showed me all the pictures she took and like her trip to Taiwan/Hong Kong I'll share a few with you.

I could show you hundreds and hundreds of pictures of old buildings, churches, statues and all that stuff, but I won't because it's boring.  You can see pictures of those famous places online or in books.  Instead I just picked out four of the more interesting pictures.

It's the Pope!  Well, not the current Pope, but a former Pope whose body is persevered and "creepy" looking according to my mom.

I liked this one because there is a cat just hanging out in it.

Haha, what??  Another weird Italian performance artist and by the looks of definitely not a starving artist type.  I wonder if he hangs out with the Invisible Guy on their days off?

Pizza!!  I was disappointed to learn she didn't go to any spaghetti factories.

My Mom went to Pompeii and when I asked where is a picture of the volcano she said she didn't take one.  What?  That makes no sense at all.  She even took the camera we gave her for Christmas a few years ago and didn't even use it.  She took all her pictures with iPad mini.  I should've installed Instagram on it for her then she can add all those "cool" filters to her photos and stuff.  All the cool kids are doing it!

I almost forgot!

The came out with Mint Oreos and since they don't say "limited edition" on them I'm assuming they are here to stay.  I bought these quite a while ago, but kind of forgot about them because they tasted so gross!  I thought they'd be good and while they do smell nice and minty they just don't taste right.  Something is off, the actual cookie itself tastes weird.  Maybe I got a bad batch, but I'm not going to buy another bag.

In other Oreo news they also have a Chocolate Oreo and the Vanilla Oreo now comes in Double Stuf.  To coincide with the NHL Stanley Cup play-offs there is also a Stanley Cup Oreo which is just a regular Oreo with the Stanley Cup on the cookie part.

I also really tried to finish my bag of Happy Birthday Oreos, but I just couldn't do it.  I didn't like them!  They ended up in the trash and I have a feeling my Mint Oreos will suffer the same fate.

Also, go check out the Oreo website, for Oreo recipes and hacks then go to Wonderfilled, where you can find videos and free songs including one by Tegan & Sara.

Quickie

I made it back to Cranbrook despite crappy snowy weather and boards with nails sticking through them littering the road through the park.  I was only gone one day, but came home to a pile of packages with my name on them.  Some it was part of Avery's birthday present, so he'll get an extra surprise next time I'm back.  Before I left I managed to see Willie for a whole 15 minutes and give him some money to pick me up some stuff at the Hanson Brothers show.

I was also going to stop at the Gold Creek Store and take a picture of the crate of fireworks, but totally forgot.  Somebody make to remind me next time I'm back so I don't forget again.  Also, Dollar Tree is open, but I hear it sucks.

ONE NIGHT ONLY

I drove back to Cranbrook today and I drive back to Calgary tomorrow.  That would make it my quickest trip ever.  I pretty much just came back to drop off Avery's birthday present and that was it.  I also got the oil changed on my car, so that was nice.  I had dinner and cake and then tomorrow it's back Calgary.  It might snow!

In my brief adventures around town this afternoon I spotted a few things that I wanted to let you guys in on, but now I can only remember two of them.  The first thing is these posters...

Should I or shouldn't I?

The second thing is that I stopped in at Pages and when I was leaving I saw a poster up for The Hanson Brothers!  They are playing at the Byng!  Where is the Byng?!  I sent Willie a text and told him he should go check it out and he said he was planning to.   The show is this Thursday and he's also going to try and score me a t-shirt and hopefully the remastered CD of Sudden Death.  I already got my money set aside.  Thanks dude!  I would've taken a picture of the poster, but I forgot my phone in the car.

That is all for now or until I remember what else I was going to put on here.  Next time you hear from me I'll be back in Calgary.

SLOW NEWS DAY

It hasn't been too exciting around here lately and I've been pretty lazy with my posts.  I'm just tired, so when I get time off I'm super extra lazy.  Also, it hasn't helped that I haven't done anything cool or exciting.  In the meantime I'll give you a quick run down of what I got.  Hint, it ain't much!

First up, go head on over to Video Junkie where my pal, William, has reviewed the movie, Expect No Mercy at my request.  I've been annoying him for a while to review other stuff *coughscoobydoopornparodycough* and he finally budged a little bit and reviewed this 90's straight to video martial arts film.  If you're interested I have a copy of the movie of DVD.

Second thing is the Doritos Locos Taco from Taco Bell is here to stay!   The funny thing is that the taco was inspired by Doritos and now they are making Doritos inspired by the taco, now THAT'S loco.

They are pretty good too.  I went through my bag pretty quickly.  I plan on buying another bag soon and that's a pretty solid endorsement from me.  Don't wait too long though, they're limited time only.

I bought this chocolate beverage from Dollarama only because it claims to have a "milky taste".   Back when I got my mom to get me some Yoo-Hoo from the States because it was also a chocolate I was disappointed after trying it.  It tasted chocolately, but it didn't taste good.  Mini Moo actually tastes good, they really nailed the "milky taste".  I would drink it again!

So there you go, not one, not two, but three recommendations from me.

The Wars!

It's been long too long since I did a post about crap I bought, so I'm back with an all Star Wars post.  I went to Phoenix Comics today, I may have mentioned this place before, and found some "treasures".

First up is this Marvel Comics adaptation of Return of the Jedi which I already own in multiple formats.  I have a couple copies of this same book, but for $1 another copy isn't going to hurt.  Marvel also released the ROTJ adaptation in a digest paperback size, a larger size magazine style and of course in a 4 issue series regular comic book format.

A tauntaun, the second coolest mode of transportation in the Star Wars universe after a speeder bike.   The bad news is that he doesn't come with his saddle and he isn't one of the tauntauns that has the open belly feature.  I still love him anyway.

He still has the "hatch" on his back to put characters in.  It's kind of stupid, but kind of nice because it's so simple.  I can pretty much put any character in there that will fit.

Even IG-88!  I was going to put a G.I. Joe figure in there, but I couldn't find my Snow Job.  I will have to keep my eye open for either Frost Bite, a Snow Serpent, Iceberg, an Ice Viper, Blizzard, Windchill, Sub-Zero, Cold Front, Snow Storm, White Out  or Snow Wolf.  I didn't realize there were that many cold weather themed G.I. Joe figures.  How come there is no dude called Avalanche?

I also got a cool giant Yoda.  He might not look too giant in the picture, but he's 6" tall.  Six inches is giant in Yoda terms, wouldn't that make him about one third scale?  Here is a picture of the giant Yoda next to the original 1980 Kenner Yoda which inspired the giant Yoda.

The giant Yoda is actually part of Gentle Giant's line of enlarged figures based on the original vintage Kenner versions.   The other figures run 12" in size except for Yoda and R2-D2 which are smaller to keep the scale the same.  They even come in replica vintage packaging and go for around $80 depending on the character.

Somebody bought my Yoda for $80, opened the packaging, sold it (probably back to) Phoenix and then I bought it $13.50.  Yes!  I would never pay $80 for the brand new Yoda and if I did I would never open it.  But since I bought a used opened version for pretty cheap, I don't have to worry about any of that stuff.  Yoda can party on where ever he wants.

If you look at the last picture you can see my original Yoda is missing his cane.  If you guys ever find one, get it for me.  I've looked on eBay, but they are all reproductions which I don't have a problem with except that the price of the cane with shipping and exchange comes out to more than I paid for actual Yoda figure.  I would pay that if it was original, but forget it if it's just a copy.

May the force be with you!

It seemed like a good idea at the time.

Memories

It has finally warmed up here in Calgary, well for a few days anyway, so there is no need for a heavy winter coat.  I dug out an old hoodie I found in my closet to wear until the next snowfall.  I put it on and when I put my hands in the pockets I found something inside!  Unfortunately, it wasn't twenty dollars.

A Giant Tiger receipt?  Geez, I haven't worn this jacket for a while.  Looks like I bought a DVD, I wonder which one?  It was probably something classic because I only watch art house cinema.  Giant Tiger we miss you!  Now I'm stuck paying MRSP at big box stores like a sucker.

New CD report

As a follow up to a previous post I did on CDs, here are a few of the new CDs I'm picked up.  As course none of them are actually "new", I just bought them used for a couple bucks each from Melodyia.

An awesome 80's comp from Much Music with a hidden track done 80's rap style called "Much Music Groove".  I think that's what it's called, but it's a hidden song, so it's not on the CD case or liner notes.  It's a shout out to Much Music and all of it's various shows at the time (1997).  It may have even been performed by Master T!  I'm too lazy to research it.

More 80's stuff!  I blindly bought this album because I liked the artwork.  I hadn't heard of them, but turns out I liked the CD.

I just got this one and haven't even listened to it yet.  On a side note, does anyone watch Portlandia?

I already have this one, but there is nothing wrong with having a back up.  The b-sides on it are also included on the Pinkerton deluxe version which I also have.  There is nothing wrong with having a back up of your back up.

I've been driving around with a RUN-DMC seat cover in my car, but no actual RUN-DMC CD in my car.  Looks like this greatest hits album will be a permanent fixture inside my car as long as I have that seat cover.  Thank god I didn't get the Lil' Wayne seat cover!

Last time I also asked if anyone had gotten any new and/or cool music lately and then nobody responded.  You guys are so lame.

Chips Ahoy!

It's crazy chip flavour time!  I was at Safeway today and bought some new chips from Old Dutch called "Double Dutch".    The bag is fancier that the usual Old Dutch stuff, so this must be their high end chips.

Even though I have already tried the President's Choice Tzatziki chips I bought these ones because they are Calamari and Tzatziki.  Unfortunately, you can't even taste the calamari!  You get the Tzatziki flavour, but you get nothing from the calamari.  What a disappointment, that's all I wanted.  Anyway, they also do Buffalo Wings, Burstin' Onion and Bacon Cheeseburger Sliders.
